EJJA Imposing one week Judo seminar in Addis Ababa by Melanie Stoll

The imposing Judo seminar of Melanie Stoll that sponsored by the German Olympic Committee and German Foreign office has been closed successfully on 14th October 2012. The one week tough seminar with its unforgettable Judo sessions is now over.

At the end of the seminar, Melanie Stoll gave attendance certificates to the participants that prepared by the German Olympic Committee. More than 80 athletes visited the seminar within one week period. On Sunday alone, there were around 60 Judokas. Athletes came from Addis Ababa, Amhara Regional State and from the Southern Regional State (SNNPR).

Most of the students learned new techniques, randori (sparing/ free-style practice) and belt exam preparation during the one week intensive training. They spent several hours on Judo training that instructed and backed by modern sport science methodology. They also learned the philosophy to respect their opponents, their trainers, meaning of belt and others. Furthermore, the attendants and the Judo & Ju-Jitsu trainers received pedagogical and ethical skills besides the technical.

A belt examination took place at the end of the Judo seminar that held for several Judokas. Just to remind, the first belt examination in the Ethiopian Judo history that recommended by IJF (International Judo Federation) was held in 2010. Nearly two years ago, we already communicated this special occasion on our website with a great pleasure. For the record, 2010 was the initial year of the new Judo generation in cooperation with International Judo Federation. Grand Master Hannes Daxbacher was assigned by Mr. Marius Vizer, IJF president in order support the Judo development in Ethiopia, whereas he proudly graduated several Judokas.

Henok Endale promoted as the first Judoka to Junior Brown belt after the waiting period of two years since his last examination. His training partner, Behalyu Mequnint was not able to continue the preparation due to his injury that caused by the last Ju-Jitsu training. Despite his Dan ranks in Karate and Ju-Jitsu, Henok Endale has strictly followed the rule and wore proudly his blue belt like all other EJJA Judokas. Henok Endale was one of the first Ethiopian athletes that participated in the Ju-Jitsu World Championships in St. Petersburg, 2010 and also represented successfully Ethiopian Karate in the 10th All-Africa Games that took place in 2011 in Maputo.

On this day, several Judokas have also been examined to blue, green, orange-green, orange and yellow belt ranks. Besides the requested techniques, the athletes for Junior Brown, Blue and Green belt have intensively studied their Nage-no-Kata and demonstrated the corresponding technique to their new belt level.

Students have helped and respected each other as well as were eager for more knowledge. They also learned the ethics of Judo and IJF. Master Melanie Stoll said “it was the best group that I ever had in Ethiopia”. The Judokas follow the strict discipline and humbleness to wear their actual student Judo belt rank or a white belt undependable from their other Martial Arts rank or achievements. Athletes that attended the seminar partially or visited the Judo training passively were not admitted to the belt examination. Master Melanie committed "as a trainer one must be fair, but as an examiner one have to be strict and follow the rules." Nevertheless she encouraged all those who missed the chance to prepare for next time.

Melanie Stoll have already been in Ethiopia from Dec. 2011 - Feb. 2012 and gave Judo lessons to different trainers and students at the Addis Ababa University. She holds her Judo Dan nearly for the last 12 years and is a trainer and coach of women's team as well as licensed to teach Judo by the state sport authorities in Germany. Her presence was also a contribution, incentive and role model for the involvement of the women in Judo respectively in sport.

At the end of the event, Melanie Stoll received a special gift from the entire EJJA executive committee for her unforgettable training and engagement, which was described as a very heart touching moment. Garmamie Sideau a documentary film maker from Canada captured the scene of the training on his camera. Mr. Sideau was already at the Ju-Jitsu seminar that hosted by Grand Master Giancarlo Bagnulo and Master Maurizio Giuseppe in September 2012. EJJA appreciate his highly engagement on the documentary of Judo and Ju-Jitsu.

EJJA would like to express its gratitude to Ms. Melanie Stoll and also to German Olympic Committee. Our thanks go to all attendants and persons that visited the seminar and appreciate the Ethiopian athletics Federation for using the training hall.

We would like to size the opportunity to inform that the World Judo day will be expected to be celebrate by the Judo and Ju-jitsu Association on 28th October as planned. EJJA has informally celebrated the World Judo day in advance with a joint training session held by Melanie Stoll two weeks ago in order to have memorable day with her before she left Ethiopia.
