5 months prior to the Games
While the Olympic qualifying process is in full swing, a break in the IJF events allows us to evaluate the situation of the athletes, who will probably take part and have a good winning potential on the occasion of the upcoming London 2012 Games. The positions held by the top 8 athletes per weight category (men and women) should not evolve much more by the end of the Olympic qualifying process. However, the games are still open in all categories, although some strong favorites emerge from reading the world ranking list. For men, it will be the top 22 competitors per weight category, taking into account the rule of 'one athlete per country', who will get a direct ticket for the Games, while among women it will be the 14 best players of the world ranking list (with the same 'one athlete per country' rule), who will be qualified to go to London. To this international quota, a continental group of athletes will also be added, the calculation also being based on the world ranking list. This qualification phase will officially end on May 1st, 2012, after the last Continental Championship of this year. Then, between May and June, the IJF will announce its 20 wild cards in order to officialize the final quota of participation at the Olympic Games.
