Opening of the 16th World Championships of Agadir

The magnificent Morrocan sea resort of Agadir is hosting from 21 till 24 October 2010 the 16th Junior World Judo Championships. Several banners could be seen on several buildings surrounding of the venue of Agadir, a town famous for its nice sandy beaches and new marina. The publicity made around this major IJF event had a good announcement on the general public, who came for this happy circumstance, in large number, to follow very closely the various fights of a very spicy level, according to the specialists of this very popular sport among youths.

The warm climate in this period of the year was of good contribution to the very friendly atmosphere, which has marked the opening of this sports event.
Not less than 597 athletes took part to this event which was organized by the very active and committed Moroccan Federation of Judo in conjunction with the International Federation. The African Continental Union is represented by ten nations with a total of 62 athletes, 39 boys and 23 girls. These figures constitute good indicators and marks of the development policies initiated by some African countries to promote and develop young judo talents.

Fort the first day of competition, on a total number of 5 Africans athletes who participated in the categories of 55 kg and 60 kg, none competitor managed to go beyond the second qualifying round. For the girls in the categories of -44kg and 48kg it was the same outcome. For the majority of interviewed athletes this participation is a first experience international competition. We need to wait for the next competition days to have a more objective evaluation of the African participation.
